The first meeting of what was to become the First Baptist Church of Dungannon in Virginia was held on March 20, 1978. There were 14 people present at this meeting. The first Sunday school was held on April 2, 1978, at the home of Pat and Paul McCafoos with 23 people in attendance. After this service, the group voted to call Blake Mullins as pastor for the new church. Pastor Mullins preached the first church service on June 18, 1978.

 

On July 23, 1978, the church held a special meeting. Rev. Paul Blessing presented the message for this service. The members voted to name the church "First Baptist". There was a formal signing with 27 charter members present.

In 1978, plans were made for purchasing land for building. The first Vacation Bible School was held. The church requested membership in the Virginia Baptist Association. The church received financial aid from the Euclid Avenue Baptist Church in Bristol, Virginia, and from the Virginia Baptist Association in Richmond.

The following year was just as important to the growth of the church. The church members had a spring revival; they made plans for the summer activities; they continued in their pursuit of a new church building for their services. Workers from churches in the Virginia Beach area came and started the foundation of the church. Other workers came from Dalton and Pine Lake, Georgia, and from West Point and Laurel, Mississippi. Ladies from this church and from other churches in the association (Coeburn, Saltville, Marion, and Chilhowie) provided meals for the workers. The first service was held in the new building in August 1979.

Pastor Mullins resigned in May 1982. Kelly Carter served the church as pastor for approximately 17 years, Ron Elliott for 14 months, and Bill Kendrick for 17 months as an interim pastor.

 

We are now pleased to have as our pastor, Larry Beavers, and his wife, Sherry.

Over the years, God has blessed the church and its members in many ways. As the membership has grown, so has the church.
